This paper is an overview of literature on the subject of gender and education in Taiwan from 1987, when Martial Law was lifted, up to the present day. It discusses the treatment and presentation of gender-related issues in Taiwan's education research. Under the influence of women/gender studies, scholars have agreed that education has served the function of reproducing social gender systems. Education research as a productive activity in generating knowledge of education serves the function of providing the theoretical basis for the education institutions. Using documents collected in three nation-wide research data-bases, this paper seeks to examine how Taiwan's education research, since the lifting of Martial Law, presented gender issues and serves what purpose regarding gender.
