How to use English articles (and how to teach their proper uses to students) is a perpetual problem for non-native speakers of English, especially for Korean speakers, whose native language lacks the article system. However, the author believes the challenge can be met if we utilize linguistic theories and knowledge and modify them. Heim's and Russel's theories on definite and indefinite NPs are introduced in an informal, revised version especially with the teaching situation in mind. And it is shown a lot of cases of English definite and indefinite NPs can be explained either in terms of Heim(1982) or Russel(1905).
