미디어, 일상, 환대 = 매개된 타자와 적절한 거리 만들기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 실버스톤의 ‘적절한 거리’ 개념을 적용하여, 한국 사회의 사회적 · 경제적 · 정치적 약자인 저학력 빈곤 여성들을 어떻게 환대할 것인지 성찰한다. 먼저 실버스톤이 어떻게 레비나스의 타자의 윤리학을 현대 미디어 문화정치에 접목하였는지를 논하고, 이를 통해 매개된 타자와의 윤리적 관계를 만드는 환대의 실천 전략으로 ‘적절한 거리’ 개념을 제시한다. 다음으로 서울의 한 청년실업센터를 통해 만난 세 명의 저학력 빈곤 여성들의 진술을 기반으로 이들이 동등한 사회 구성원으로 존중받는 것을 저해하는 ‘부적절한 거리’들은 무엇인지 그리고 디지털 미디어 사용은 이러한 경험들과 어떻게 얽혀 있는지 탐사한다. 결론으로 인간으로서의 존재와 가치를 인정받을 수 있는 기회를 구성하는 것이 ‘적절한 거리’를 구축하기 위한 필수 요소임을 역설하고, 이를 실천하기 위한 윤리적 주체의 복원을 요청한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Drawing on Roger Silverstone’s notion of ‘proper distance,’ this article discusses how we as a media practitioner as well as user can build an ethical relationship with mediated others. First, it explores how Silverstone developed the concept of ‘proper distance’ as a critique of new media while adopting Levinas’ ethic of others. With this concept of ‘proper distance’ with mediated others, this paper also investigates the nature of improper distance experienced by three undereducated young women living in poverty and how their use of digital media is interwoven with their attempt to construct proper distance in everyday life.
