This thesis will stand to examine the true liturgy and fasting that God wants from us living today, by studying Isa 58, 1-12 which is a representative verse on a fast. The study on this text will be done to know the true meaning of ‘genuine fasting that God desires’ and to put this theory into practice in our life.
The body is studied by dividing it into three parts which are establishing the scope of main body, studying the text and its footnote. The Isa chapter 58, the 58, 1-12 is regarded to be the body as considering the opinion and appropriateness of majority scholars although it has paragraph 14, 58,13-14 is regarded to be the additional phrases to continue the logics.
The Hebrew original copy and the translated edition have been proposed for methodological body study, and attempted to understand more accurately by criticizing the body. Also, the effort was made to apply the contents criticized here to a translation, so it can be amended faithfully to a original. The establishment period of the body (Isa 58,1-12) can be proper to see after the Babylon exile, and the author is expected to the prophet of the 3rd Isaiah. It is especially important that it is similar to the Isa chapter 60-62 and it is the word to the people as a whole. Also, the body not only repeats the prophecies of the prophets before the exile, it is more likely to be assumed that the body had been delivered with his wish and hope for the fasting and religious belief of the Juda community. The literature structure of the body is highly complicated, although there is controversy for the type of structure, it is seen to be having 3 different parts. This is the 1st paragraph that indicates the word of the God as the introduction, 2-4 paragraphs that shows the negative aspects of the fasting, and the5-12 paragraphs that points out of the true fasting and the promise of bless as the result.
The annotations of the body will be examined based on the divided as total 8 parts from the structure. The first paragraph as the introduction, was about the role of inviting the civilians "trumpet" and comparing to the chapter 57 "my civilians" and "Jacob’s family". From the 2-3a paragraphs, it describes the attitudes of Israel that pursuits the God. This is totally opponent to the prophecy of prophet in the Chapter 1. However, the cross questions of the Israelis, which are “Why not look at us and our fasting? Why not give us your attention for our penance?” clearly indicate that their fasting is the sham performance. The paragraph 3b-4 gives the answers for the questions of Israelis. Finally, the conclusion of the 4th paragraph is clear. Improper fasting should not be continued. Their
sham and out of mind fasting is not exempting their sin, it even reveals their sins. The paragraph 5 repeats the questions on paragraph 3a, and continues the discussion about the fasting through the general questions. Paragraph 6-7 indicates that pitiful people’s close relationship is developed through the structures of 3+1. Paragraph 6 is realized beyond the scale of individual, the paragraph 7 related to dividing the individual food, clothing and shelter. For the case of 8-9a paragraphs describe the blessed outcomes that the people undertake the new and true fasting, which is the save that blasts the lights and the God is being with those people. The paragraph 9b-10a proposes the representative evil deed and good deed as the conditional sentences. Finally, the paragraph 10a-12 describes the outcomes of proposed conditions from the 9b-10a paragraphs.
In the conclusion, the theological implication about the true fasting is proposed with the body. Not just sham fasting and performance, it is important to have the true fasting and performance with the real meanings. That is what the Jesus Christ, who sacrificed his life on the cross wants and what he did. And we should never forget the fact that life with this way is to follow the life of the Jesus Christ.
