This study categorizes Four Pillars of Destiny of Korean Chaebols into three types based on classical Mingliology. Leaving from methodologies applied in previous research papers, it adopts a new approach to analyze executives of conglomerates. Initiated by questioning whether traditional methodologies apply to modern conglomerates, this study aims to examine conglomerate executives from the perspective of Mingliology.
The objects analyzed in this study are conglomerate executives from companies listed on the stock exchange list, specifically focusing on wealthy conglomerates who have maintained their wealth through several generations, including founders and second to third generations. The study places particular emphasis on the transition periods when these conglomerates were established. Thirty-two individuals were chosen and classified by generation, and their Four Pillars (四柱) were analyzed. The analysis criteria included the composition of the Four Pillars from the perspective of Yin-Yang and Five Elements, the flow of Five Elements from Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, relationships between the Ten Gods, the strength of the wealth star, Bazi Structure(格局), and the Adjust (調候論). This study focuses on examining the backgrounds and life transition phases of conglomerate founders when they accumulated their wealth.
The research findings are as follows:
Firstly, characteristics of founder executives were classified primarily based on their ability to handle Wealth Stars within the relationships among the Ten Gods : the type of Companion Strong- Wealth Strong(比旺財旺型) 40%, the type of Output Vitalizing Wealth(食傷生財型) 40%, the type of Officer Vitalizing Resource(官印相生型) 20%. This indicates that these generations actively pursued wealth accumulation with clear objectives, showing traits necessary for success during transformative periods.
Secondly, it was observed that 比旺財旺型 remained consistent at 40% among second-generation executives, while 食傷生財型 decreased to 20% and 官印相生型 increased to 40% compared to founders.
This shift suggests a trend towards different strategic focuses and adaptations in wealth management.
Thirdly, the third generation showed a significant increase in 官印相生型 to 80%, with 比旺財旺型 at 10% and 食傷生財型 at 10%, indicating a further evolution towards strategic management practices conducive to wealth preservation and growth.
From founders to third-generation conglomerate leaders, common traits include auspicious alignments of wealth elements in their Year and Month pillars, alongside a harmonious interaction of the Eight Characters and relationships among Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.
The three main achievements and significance of this paper are presented below.
First, by combining the traditional methods of analysis with the new approach of this study, Bazis of Big Businessmen can be classified into three types. Among the conglomerate leaders studied, the results classified them into two predominant types: those thriving in wealth accumulation (比旺財旺型) and those prospering despite adversity (食傷生財型). This reflects characteristics seen in periods of transformation, where bold challenges, innovative ideas, and unwavering dedication are key factors in achieving wealth.
Secondly, it was evident that luck plays a role in conglomerate leaders' ability to achieve wealth. South Korea has experienced rapid development amidst economic changes. Analyzing the Four Pillars (四柱) of the targeted conglomerate leaders revealed that adapting appropriately to rapid changes enables them to accumulate and sustain wealth.
Thirdly, through the analysis of business leaders' Four Pillars (四柱), we can understand the outlook of businesses and contemplate economic trends. South Korea has achieved rapid economic development and is now in the era of globalization. The future of Korean enterprises is closely intertwined with the trends of the Korean economy, alongside the distinct characteristics of conglomerates. Active responses by business leaders to global competition and changes, combined with comprehensive studies of mingly (명리), are anticipated.
