In this paper, by preprocessing the international patent classification(IPC) symbol and the applicant in the patent document data using R, respectively, the patent-IPC and the applicant-IPC symbol data matrix were generated. When analyzing the IPC symbol, it is suggested to use the complete patent-IPC symbol data matrix. Since this matrix is a sparse matrix, it is proposed to use the applicant-IPC symbol data matrix for technical analysis as a way to reduce the sparsity. As an application example, patent trend analysis and applicant-IPC symbols were clustered and visualized using patent document data related to secondary batteries for electric vehicles.
