In growth-oriented capitalist societies, the logic of dichotomy has often marginalized individuals with illness, disease, or disability, portraying them as “other” who are primarily in need of care and protection. Within this framework, women with chronic illnesses have been largely excluded from discussions about caregiving agency and parental roles. This study, grounded in this critical awareness, aimed to explore and understand the meaning and essence of motherhood as experienced by women living with chronic illnesses. In-depth interviews were conducted with five women diagnosed with chronic conditions, and the collected data were analyzed using a phenomenological research method. The analysis revealed four essential themes: “Motherhood navigating between ideals and realities”, “Motherhood enduring internal and external battles”, “Motherhood sustained through interdependence”, and “Emerging motherhood moving toward an open-ended future”. This study sheds light on the lives of women with chronic illnesses, not as passive recipients of care and protection, but as active agents and caregiving subjects – and, further, as agents of safety who actively safeguard their own and their children’s lives under uncertain conditions. It offers a multifaceted understanding of the intersecting experiences of illness and womanhood, particularly within the context of motherhood, and identifies their concrete needs and challenges. Furthermore, by reflecting on the meaningful lives and relationships that persist beneath the surface of their struggles, this research suggests the possibility of redefining motherhood. Based on these findings, the study proposes practical implications, including the alleviation of caregiving burdens experienced by women with chronic illnesses and the improvement of medical and social welfare support systems, as well as the establishment of a safety support system that recognizes and supports these women not as objects of safety but as its active co-producers.
