다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

Different from the written language, the spoken language is accompanied by diverse patterns of paralinguistic behavior. While the written form is limited in its capacity of communication for its spatio-temporal constraints, the speaker in the spoken discourse can afford to incorporate the listeners` reactions and/or feedback to his or her spoken message. Thus, the speaker varies his or her voice quality, tone, pitch, speed, and uses other accompanying behaviors to convey the subtle message that may be hard to express literally through the words of the sentence. This paper analyzes diverse patterns of paralinguistic expressions focusing on the report of speakers` utterance, mostly in novels or essays where characters` inner state of mind is described vividly by reporting their speech and its paralinguistic features. The patterns the paralinguistic expressions are classified into five different categories according to their syntactic structures: separate sentences, adverbs, comparison, participial phrases, and prepositional phrases. This kind of analysis has not been done, so hopefully this study may contribute to understanding diverse patterns of paralinguistic expressions in English and further the socio-cultural background.
