The Seowon was a private institution that was to hold memorial services to excellent scholars, to lecture and study in the Chosun Dynasty. To lecture and study, each Seowon had a library and published books. 184 kinds of titles engraved by 84 Seowons were included in 『The Nupan-go ; List of engraving on wood』 compiled in King Jeong-jo.
Up to now the Cheongryang Seowon in Junghwa is known as the first Seowon which published books. I doubted whether the xylographs kept in Cheongryang Seowon were really the first Seowon published books. Hereat I investigated the identity of the xylographs of the Cheongryang Seowon, as well as the beginning of the book publishing in Seowon during the Chosun Dynasty.
The Cheongryang Seowon published 5 kinds of books, 『Sog-Munbeom』 was published in 1565, 『Keunsarog』 and 『Hanseo jeoncho』 published in 1566, 『Yonghak Seok-eui』 published in 1567, 『Gosa Tongryak』 published in 1568. These books were published by An Sang(1511-1571), Junghwa county Governor.
These 5 titles had preface or postscript, an imprint written by An Sang. The woodblocks of 『Yonghak Seokeui』 was burnt out by the order of Yi Hwang, the author of the book. So the woodblocks and the printed books were not transmitted. They are ; 『Sog Munbeom』 was “Engraved on the wood and housed in the Cheongryang seowon”. 『 Keunsarog』 “was published by An Sang, Junghwa county Governor in 1566 and the woodblocks were housed in the Cheongryang seowon”, 『 Hanseo jeoncho』 was “engraved on wood and housed in the Cheongryang seowon …”, 『Gosa Tongryak』 was “engraved on wood in 1568 and housed in the Cheongryang seowon”. All four titles had records of them engraved on wood and housed in the Cheongryang seowon.
The Cheon-gog Seowon in Seongju published 3 kinds of books, 『Seol Muncheong-gong dogseorog』 was published in 1574, 『Sugheung Yamaejam』 and 『Jujaseo jeolyo』 were published in 1575. These books were published by Jeong Gu (1543-1620), who was in charge of the Cheon-gog Seowon. These 3 titles had imprints written by Jeong Ku. 『Seol Muncheong-gong dogseorog』 was “engraved on wood in 1574 in the Cheon-gog Seowon”, 『Sugheung Yamaejam』 was “engraved on wood in 1575 in the Cheon-gog Seowon”, 『Jujaseo jeolyo』 was “engraved once again on wood in 1575 in the Cheon-gog Seowon”.
Therefore, unlike what is known, the Cheon-gog Seowon in Seongju was really the first seowon which published books.
