This study states that how Zhu Xi’s Seowon(Shuyuan) culture affected Seowons in Joseon and how Seowons in Joseon were established and developed with the influences. For this, the study reviews both < Zhu Xi’s Shuyuan culture offering intellectual bases on the establishment of Korean Seowons > and < Development of Korean Seowon culture >.
Chapter 1 < Zhu Xi’s Shuyuan culture offering intellectual bases on the establishment of Korean Seowons > explains the process of the establishment and development of Seowons at the time between King Sejong and King Seonjo. In the era of King Sejong, with the influences of Zhu Xi’s ≪A Note on Bailudong-Shuyuan≫(≪白鹿洞書院揭示≫), Seowons had been established. Because of bad management in civil examinations and dramatic decrease in students in the governmental school in the era of King Jungjong, Seowons were widely established. The systematization and independence of Seowons came from efforts of Yi Eon-jeok and Yi Hwang. Yi Eon-jeok wrote ≪Educational Regulation of Oksan Seowon≫, Yi Hwang wrote ≪Bailudong Educational Regulation Commentaries≫(≪白鹿洞學規集注序≫) and ≪Bailudong Regulation Schemes≫(≪白鹿洞規圖≫) and Yi Yi wrote ≪Educational Regulation on Eunbyeongjungsa≫(≪白鹿洞規圖≫), respectively, systemizing Seowon operation. In final part, the situations of Seowons from the 19th Century to present, and its restoration and roles are explained.
Chapter 2 < Development of Korean Seowon culture > describes that the Seowons in Joseon Era, which had been established under the Zhu Xi’s Shuyuan culture’s influences, played a role of educational institutes and its uniqueness in development, contrasting to the Chinese Shuyuans. In the study, remarkable characteristics of the Seowons in Joseon include transiting Confucian knowledge and inheriting culture, sacrifice activities, development of Yehak(禮學), spreading << Chu-tzu Cha-li >>(≪朱子家禮≫), development of writing Yehak(禮學), and praising Zhu Xi, etc.
