What is a school? A school is an education institution that helps students to live together in harmony, improving their social adjustment abilities, and to form correct values based on basic character virtues that all human beings should have. However, nowadays many students undergo numerous difficulties due to bullies, the pressure of the entrance examination system, etc. Even worse, the number of students who give up on life, not being able to stand the pressure and stress from studying, is increasing steadily. We should reconsider what education is needed for students by reminding ourselves what the role of a school is. In other words, we should provide students with character education that both helps cultivate a sound mind and body and delivers systematic knowledge. It is character education that is the purpose of school existence and its ultimate goal. Then, what approach can be taken in teaching the Chinese language at school? In this thesis, I suggest the goal of the character education in teaching and learning the Chinese language at school and the possibility of its achievement, illuminating the connection between Chinese language education and character education. Culture education is the method that enables the teaching and learning of character education in the Chinese class at school to be achieved. I concluded that character education can be achieved in teaching the Chinese language at school based on the culture and view suggested in the 2009 Revised Chinese Curriculum Ⅰ·Ⅱ. Also, I classified the contents of the current Chinese language course books, sorted out the common topics, and organized them into the application of eight core values and virtues in the lives of individuals and in interpersonal relationships. In addition, I aimed to connect the study of ethics and social studies with previous studies on Chinese language teaching and learning methods through character education using the Shared model (Fogarty's curriculum integration)for continuous character education methods. I hope that this study confirms the possibility of the application of character education in Chinese language classes and forms the basis of Chinese language teachers applying character education resources in the classroom. Furthermore, my desire is that schools promote students’ recovery and growth by taking a core role in students’ education, and I hope that Chinese language education takes the lead in this area.
