      고대 라틴어 문법학의 영국적 변형 -7-8세기 앵글로 색슨 라틴어 문법서를 중심으로- = Anglo-Saxon Transformation of Ancient Latin Grammars

      This article aims to explore the emergence of Latin grammars in England during the 7th and 8th centuries. The introduction of Christianity into the area brought with it the necessity of learning and teaching the Latin language. The Anglo-Saxon teachers had at first no other way than to use the Latin grammars handed down from Late Antiquity, but the grammatical doctrines and ways of presentation found in the ancient grammars were far from accommodating the needs of Anglo-Saxon students, particularly in the morphological aspect. In response to the deficiency of morphological explanations of the ancient Latin grammars, the Anglo-Saxon teachers attempted to make a new type of grammars based on ancient models. This new type of grammars, the so-called “Insular Latin grammars,” is characterised by the combination of ancient doctrines with the systematic presentation of inflectional paradigms accompanied by lists of words. Another type of grammars, which is solely devoted to the forms of the nouns or the verbs, is also developed as a reference book. Works on the orthograpy also proliferated in this period. This article first investigates the characteristic features of the ancient Latin grammars used by the Anglo-Saxons during the two centuries. In the second section of the main body, the new methods of grammatical description employed by the Anglo-Saxon teachers are discussed. The analysis of the Anglo-Saxon Latin grammars offer a better understanding of the practice of Latin education in the early medieval England. At the same time, these grammars present a good repository of Latin vocabulary circulated in England during the period. The Anglo-Saxon Latin grammars is a good example of the transformation of one tradition into another when placed in a new environment.
