This paper attempts to clarify the background on the order King Jeongjo r 17761800 gave in 1791 to civil officials to reply to his ques¬tion on how to root out and rectify “secular learning,” which had become popular among some Confucian literati. “Secular learning” was intro¬duced during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties of China, and it gained many followers in Korea. King Jeongjo’s order was precipitated by a national crisis caused by the growth of Catholicism and anti-Confu¬cian values among a small group of people. His order was made just after the execution of two Christians who had burnt their ancestors’ memorial tablets. On the surface, his intent seems to be to implement a sweeping reform with respect to the distribution of secular writings by a group of Confucians in order to reestablish “Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism” 朱子學. The king identified the contemporary trend in writing as “secular learning” and blamed it for contaminating the country with selfishness and the pursuit of individual desires, regardless of social class. His dec¬laration was intended to bring an end to the endless ideological debates between the two opposing parties in his government with the reestab¬lishment of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism.
At the same time, the king was well aware that the focus of Zhu Xi’s philosophy was on cultivating pure mind and pursuing the principle of the universe and that it was not enough to maintain the absolute authority of his kingship. His ruling principle also came from the contemporary “practical learning” precepts of Confucian scholars Yi Ik and Yun Hyu, but he included his own interpretation and developed his own thoughts on the perspective of kingship. The schools which King Jeongjo blamed for the deviation from “right learning” 正學 were a group of followers of the Yangming School 陽明學, encyclopedic study 淹博, and textual reading during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The king’s definition of “secular learning” was the opposite of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism simi¬lar to the orthodox Chinese tradition of learning.
Tasan, once close to the absolute power of the monarchy and recog¬nized by others as the best scholar to give lectures on classical Chinese literature to the king, had a different view of “secular learning.” Com¬pared with King Jeongjo, Tasan accepted “secular learning” as another way of pursuing the truth in the world. He did not appear to agree with the alternative scheme of “right learning.” This attitude enabled him to develop a new perspective outside of Zhu Xi’s philosophy. During the 18th century, there was a new cultural atmosphere in which some Con¬fucian scholars incorporated human desire and daily life into their “way of learning.” Unlike “secular learning” as an object to be removed as King Jeongjo demanded, Tasan’s “secular learning” offered another way to appreciate and support everyday life in the country. In addition, his philosophy was different from the Chinese narrative literature schools such as Gōngān School 公安派 and Jìngling School 竟陵派, which influenced the writing style of Korean literati during the late Joseon dynasty. Tasan, with an approach that differed from that of Zhu Xi, tried to overcome this and to provide a new philosophy that focused more on appreciation of practical methods. Tasan’s poem titled “Threshing Bar¬ley” 打麥行 is a good example of his philosophy on “secular learning.”
