In this study, we analyzed the gueum, oral pronunciation, of Korean musical instruments using Korean phonetics and phonology, and based on that, we studied the principles and systems of gueum of Korean musical instruments. The results are as follows.
The initial consonants of gueum of Korean musical instruments are mainly alveolar and velar sounds based on the position of articulation of consonants, and appear in plosives, fricatives, nasals, and liquids based on the method of articulation. The gueum of melodic instruments such as geomungo and piri is distinguished by the method of articulation, and the gueum of percussion instruments, which are non-melodic instruments, uses the position of articulation rather than the method of articulation as a criterion for distinguishing the method of articulation.
The neutral tones of the geomungo, piri, and janggu mostly use back vowels, but the kkwaenggwari only uses front vowels. This is because although both janggu and kkwaenggwari are percussion instruments, the material of the instrument is different, and unlike janggu that uses both chaepyeon and gungpyeon, the kkwaenggwari mainly uses one side, so it is understood that they are distinguished by vowels. In addition, while instruments that play melodies like geomungo and piri use more than six different vowels, janggu and kkwaenggwari, which are non-melodic instruments, use three or fewer vowels. In other words, string instruments and wind instruments that must distinguish multiple pitches require multiple vowels to distinguish them, but non-melodic percussion instruments that only need to distinguish rhythms use a relatively small number of vowels. However, even though they are both percussion instruments, like janggu and kkwaenggwari, vowels are considered more important than consonants in distinguishing the tones of the two instruments.
The final consonant of the Korean traditional musical instrument's gueum is mainly found in stringed instruments and percussion instruments, and is not used in wind instruments. The string instrument geomungo uses only the velar consonant in the articulation position and the nasal consonant in the articulation method, but percussion instruments use the alveolar consonant and velar consonant in the articulation position, and the plosive and nasal consonants in the articulation method.
In short, the gueum of Korean traditional musical instruments seen through phonetics and phonology is distinguished by the material of the instrument, the playing method, and the relationship of opposition, and this is again distinguished from each other based on the phonemes of the initial consonant, medial vowel, and final consonant, and it was found that the vocalization of melodic instruments, which has many elements to distinguish, is more important based on vowels than on consonants.
