This paper deals with practical principles and institutional tasks for developing ``self-help communities`` as the social economic organizations in Korea and analyses the socio-economic characteristics of 56 self-help communities in Busan Metropolitan City. It focuses them with respect to such factors as market opportunities, the employment and wage condition, the social purposes and the accumulation of social capitals, barriers to the organizational growth, and the prospects for transforming into social enterprises. In conclusion, this paper suggests the directions for developing self-help communities on the basis of social economy perspectives.
