This study examines how performance feedback affects firms’ R&D investment and how this relationship is moderated by CEO celebrity. According to performance feedback theory, when firms’ performance falls below or exceeds aspirations, firms tend to adjust the intensity of search activities. R&D investment is uncertain and involves long payback periods, yet it is a core driver of innovation and long-term competitiveness. Although prior work has identified a range of contextual moderators of the relationship between performance–aspiration gaps and R&D, comparatively little attention has been paid to whether CEO public visibility conditions this relationship. Using panel data on publicly listed U.S. manufacturing firms from 2015 to 2024, the analysis indicates that when performance falls below aspirations, neither the main effect of negative performance feedback nor its interaction with CEO celebrity is significantly associated with R&D intensity. By contrast, when performance exceeds aspirations, positive performance feedback is, on average, negatively associated with R&D intensity, while its interaction with CEO celebrity is positive and statistically significant. This pattern indicates that firms led by celebrity CEOs reduce R&D less than firms led by non-celebrity CEOs when performance is above aspirations. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating CEO celebrity as a key boundary condition and imply that CEO visibility and social standing can indirectly affect R&D intensity through the performance feedback process. Practically, the results highlight the importance of designing R&D decision processes that take CEO celebrity into account when adjusting R&D levels.
