Lip makeup products offer a visually aesthetic effect by lip coloring while serving as a cosmetic clinic to correct and complement lip shape. However, applying them direct to sensitive lips risks ingestion of them. Therefore, technical research on cosmetic products is required for a guarantee of not only safe application to lips, but also efficient lip coloring. Recent years have seen an increasing interest in cosmetics ingredients. The concern for health prompts growing interest in vegan cosmetics that have neither cosmetic additives such as chemical preservatives, cosmetic colorants, and fragrance ingredients, nor animal origin raw materials with cross-contamination, spawning a variety of vegan lip makeup products. Most research literature on vegan lip makeup product has so far focused on such survey research as emotions of applying them, and behaviors of buying them, with most of studies on emotional mage classification conducted in terms of color functions. However, we conducted a market research for vegan lip makeup products to grasp the user’s feelings of applying the products and their reaction seen after application. And then, we did a comparative experiment in color development between vegan and none-vegan lip makeup products to explore the possibilities of functional enhancement in color expression. The findings and the implication of this study were as follows.
First, this study showed women in their 20s bought at least 1peace of lip makeup product or more in a year. And they decided to buy based on more color than price or quality, meaning trend colors and personal color is the driving force behind their buying behavior. It suggests before launching lip makeup products, it should be taken in consideration to reflect trend colors and personal color to develop the products of a variety of colors suitable for consumer tastes. Second, the market research showed vegan lip makeup products enjoyed a very good recognition in terms of safety, protection, color development, functional cosmetics. It implies the solid demand-side ground work has been laid for developing vegan lip makeup products and revamping the market.
Third, as for user’s feelings, there was seen a little difference in spread ability, consistency, irritation, color development, and color maintenance between formulas of lip stick, and lip gloss. It suggests a clear functional differentiation and positioning between them should be ensured in order to satisfy the women’s digging consumption.
Finally, regarding color development, this study showed vegan lip makeup products was poorer than none-vegan lip makeup ones. Especially, lip gloss formulas was poorer than lip stick ones, requiring technical complementing, specifically with light colors such as pink and orange in need of complementing. It means the vegan lip makeup product enjoys a more positive recognition than the none-vegan lip makeup product in terms of texture, irritation, etc., while seeing a poorer color development, contrary to the general perception. This implies steady research is required for enhancing the color development in vegan lip make up products. In brief, the findings of this study confirmed there is a need for developing vegan lip makeup products that ensure not only safe application to lips, but also efficient lip coloring. And also, the implication is that developing various vegan cosmetic ingredients, along with technically complementing color development would lead to promoting production and consumption of vegan lip makeup products, thereby helping revamp the market.
