    This study aims to investigate the emergence, development, and eventual disappearance of the category of ‘relative pronouns’ in the history of Korean grammar. The theory of Korean relative pronouns originated with Yu Kil-jun(1897–1904) and ceased to exist by the time of Shin Myeong-gyun (1933). The general trends found in these grammar books can be categorized into three perspectives: those emphasizing the 'relational' function of relative pronouns, those focusing on the ‘connective’ function, and those highlighting ‘syntactic dependency.’ Among these, the theory emphasizing syntactic dependency replaced the relative pronoun theory after its disappearance, evolving into the concepts of ‘incomplete nouns,’ ‘formal nouns,’ and eventually ‘dependent nouns’ as they are known today.
