행복(eudaimonia)의 정치 = 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』과 『정치학』에 나타난 철학적 삶과 정치적 삶의 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 가치 있는 삶에 관한 문제를 둘러싼 고대적 논의의 맥락에서 아리스토텔레스가 기여한 바가 무엇인가를 추적하고 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』과 『정치학』에 등장하는 철학적 삶과 정치적 삶의 관계를 면밀히 분석한다. 일반적으로 널리 알려진 바와 같이 아리스토텔레스는 정치적 삶 (bios politikos)보다 철학적 삶 (bios theoretikos)을 우월한 것으로 간주한다. 그러나 이런 일반적인 이해는 아리스토텔레스의 사상적 일관성과 텍스트의 통일성을 해치는 요소를 안고 있다. 본 논문은 두 저작에서 표면적으로 드러난 이런 문제점을 극복하기 위해, 논문의 2장에서는 『니코마코스 윤리학』의 1권과 10권을 통일성 있게 해석하였으며, 3장과 4장에서는 『정치학』을 중심으로 정치적 삶과 철학적 삶의 관계를 새롭게 조망하였다. 결론적으로 본 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 두 저작에서 드러난 표면적인 애매성은 철학자와 일반 시민들에게 각각 가장 적합한 형태의 가치 있는 삶을 선택할 수 있도록 하고자 한 아리스토텔레스의 의도에 기인한다고 주장한다. 철학자들에게는 철학적 삶이 가장 가치 있는 삶임을 재확인하고, 일반 시민들에게는 “철학적 삶을 닮은 정치적 삶”이 철학적 삶과 견줄 수 있는 가치 있는 삶이라는 메시지를 아리스토텔레스는 전달하고 있다. 특히 아리스토텔레스는 인문교육과 음악활동의 중요성을 역설하고 있다. 음악은 일반시민들에게 정치적 삶이 그것 자체로서 가장 가치 있는 삶이 될 수 있도록 하는데 필수적인 요건이 되며, 철학적 삶의 가치를 최고로 인정함으로써, 정치적 삶의 수단과 목적을 혼동하지 않게 된다는 것이다. 이러한 새로운 형태의 정치적 삶의 모색은 궁극적으로 개인의 행복을 정치와 연결시키는 새로운 시도로 볼 수 있으며, 기왕의 경쟁의 정치(politics of agon)를 극복하고 행복의 정치(politics of eudaimonia)를 지향하기 위한 기초 작업이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The article examines Aristotle’s contribution to the well-known issue concerning “worthy way of life” in ancient Greek context. It focuses on Aristotle’s two major political works, Nicomachean Ethics and Politics in the light of the prevalent question of what is the worthiest way of life. According to the dominant interpretation, Aristotle endorses the philosophical life as the worthiest. This interpretation, however, faces a few difficult problems with respect to textual unity of each work and theoretical consistency of his thought between the two works. The article attempts to solve those problems through close reading of the two texts. It argues that the apparent ambiguity of Aristotle’s position is explained by his intension that both potential philosophers and ordinary citizens choose the best way of life as they could. Aristotle reaffirms philosophers that the philosophical life alone is the best. At the same time, he implies to the ordinary citizens that the political life is also choice-worthy if it assimilates philosophical life. The article concludes that the new concept of political life eventually opens the possibility of the politics of eudaimonia, which may replace politics of agon.
