Modern society attaches great importance to knowledge, information and culture, and there are many various cultures. As global cultural exchanges have been made and rapid changes have occurred, traditional fine art education is needed in order to help our students establish firm national identity and develop unique spirit of our nation and aesthetic consciousness. Traditional fine art education can help students to understand our art and culture properly and to accept other countries' art and culture critically.
Traditional fine art education has been emphasized in previous curriculums and also now the 7th curriculum points out that we should create new value and tradition and cultivate future oriented men, needed in education, by educating traditional fine art.
Among other traditional fine arts, especially traditional patterns have settled deeply in our life and they have expressed customs or emotions of public life symbolically for ages. In addition, It is traditional patterns that have accumulated universal aesthetic consciousness of one nation, repeatedly changing and developing over long history.
There have been studies on traditional patterns and efforts to use this in education, however teaching designs for modern uses of traditional patterns in actual education has not been systematic. Moreover methods of teaching designs are insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the emphasis was on making ways to teach practical technique of art, which can offer students opportunities to express direct and creative idea and help second or third grade students of middle school to take pride in our traditional culture and to have wide range of artistic experiences, with focus on traditional plant and flower patterns that have been close to our life and shown our emotions. This study was progressed as following.
First, I, researcher, studied concepts, features, classifications, symbols, values and aesthetic of traditional plant and flower patterns by examining the related literatures.
Second, I found out how traditional fine art education is classified and importance of traditional fine art education suggested in curriculum by analyzing the fine art education in the 7th curriculum.
Third, I analyzed works using traditional patterns and methods of teaching proposed by present textbooks of middle school.
Fourth, I surveyed images of traditional pattern and thoughts about classes using traditional patterns students have through questionnaire of second and third students of middle school.
Fifth, I studied principles of pattern design to help develop design ideas and types and methods of teaching creative thinking by analyzing the related literatures and the previous studies.
Sixth, I developed a guidance plan for teaching & studying, which can be actually applied to students, basing information acquired through this study.

By analyzing the 7th curriculum and textbooks, I found out that although traditional fine art education has been emphasized in curriculums, present textbooks deal with traditional fine art in merely appreciation part. According to the questionnaire of students, almost all students have insufficient learning experience related to traditional patterns, replying that though they think traditional patterns are beautiful and creative, don't know about them well. In addition, if they took a class using traditional patterns, they would prefer practical technique class such as design and making to learning theories or appreciating works. Therefore, we need to develop methods of teaching practical design techniques using traditional patterns.
In this study, I applied Alex Osborn's checklist and forms of repetitive arrangement of patterns(Richard M. Proctor), which students can easily understand, to creative design thinking. Basing on them, I suggested a guidance plan for teaching & studying. It leads students to collect, redesign original traditional plant and flower patterns creatively and decorate T-shirts with their own design by using silkscreen. Through this learning, students can understand the value of modern uses of traditional patterns, have positive attitude toward traditional fine art, and finally, grow creative thinking power by thinking variously. Besides, I expect that this study will contribute to promoting quality and diversity of classes using traditional patterns which teachers can take advantage of.
