행주산성 전투에 사용된 변이중 화차의 복원 = A Study on the Fire Vehicle of Byun Eejoong

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to restore 'Fire Vehicle by Byun Eejoong' which was used during the Battle of Haengju of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Even though Byun Eejoong designed the Fire Vehicle used at the Haengju battle, Moon Jong Vehicle is displayed in Haengju Victory Memorial Hall.
In this research I reached the conclusion that Byun Eejoong used the simple projection method for his fire vehicle design of Mangamjip, so I have tried to restore the fire vehicle based on Byun's drawing instead of making an excessive assumption of it.
It is convincing that the fire vehicle design is not ichnography. It makes more sense that the fire vehicle design was drawn in the front view in which the launcher of the vehicle is seen in front, so you can see the 40 crenels. The launcher is laid on the cart to move. We can draw an inference that Byun's fire vehicle is a shield-shaped long spear vehicle and also is a shape variable vehicle, which means the cart and the launcher can be separated.
Byun's fire vehicle is a '∩'-shaped close-range weapon similar to claymore mine of today. This design makes reloading process easy and has the gunbarrel cooled rapidly. It is also useful for building an advantageous stronghold using the middle space as a shield.
