Global warming and exhaustion of natural resource have threatened the living and surviving of ecosystem as well as human being. The government of South Korea announced the era of "Green Growth" in 2008 to protect and conserve environment by reducing CO2 emissions and to promote green-related industries for energy conservation, pollution treatment, and environmental preservation. Fashion business recently pay particular attention to green marketing by introducing organic cotton products, well-being product made by bamboo, bean, charcoal, etc., goods made by recycled plastic bottles, and transhion items. Trashion is a combining word of 'trash' and 'fashion', and describes any wearable fashion items or accessories created from used, thrown-out materials as recycling. This study examined the fashion brands with respect to green marketing strategies and marketability of trashion products.
The data were collected through interview method from eight fashion brands which were eagerly conducting green marketing. The most general activities of green marketing were to produce eco-friendly products and/or an economical supports to environmental groups or green conservation campaign. The major reason was to take a social responsibility in the first place, then to improve brand image, and to participate environmental movement in order. However, the price of green product was the most challenging issue for green marketing. The marketability of trashion was directly opposed. Respondents mentioned that the life cycle of trashion was just stepping in the growth stage, so the market has potential corresponding to social and environmental concerns. On the other hand, negative response indicated that it was early to invest in the trashion market due to consumers' lack of awareness and preference of new things, or limitation to satisfy consumer's aesthetic value.
In addition, as a growing number of environmentally conscious consumers, this study focused on how respondents actually do recycling behaviors and how their environmental concerned behaviors were consistent with their Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS). The purpose of this study is to examine the intention to purchase eco-friendly products and to identify the influential factors. Also respondents were categorized on the basis of their recycling behaviors and to profile the demographic characteristics, LOHAS characteristics, and clothing consumption values. The primary objective of this study is to provide the descriptive and exploratory information about Korean eco-sumers.
A total of 600 usable questionnaires were collected from 20-40 generations through a web survey. When comparing the purchase intention of eco-friendly products, respondents preferred Korean brand to foreign one, and recycling t-shirts to trashion bags. Regression analysis indicated that compatibility with personal image, price, and design were the significant attributes to increase the purchase intention of eco-friendly products.
By using k-mean cluster analysis with recycling behavior factors, three segments were obtained, active recycling group (n=147), donation group (n=227), and non-recycling group (n=226). Significant differences were found in gender, marital status, occupation, and age among three clusters. Non-recycling group presented a relatively higher proportion of single, and male. The first and second groups showed similar tendency in LOHAS characteristics. Clothing consumption values displayed differences among three groups. Active recycling group was more concerned about personal value and social value than the other segments. The findings would enable organizations to understand eco-friendly behavior and to design appropriate strategic decisions to appeal the eco-sumers.
