The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between readiness to change and insight in alcoholism.
The subjects were 131 male alcohol dependents who were being hospitalized in an Alcohol Treatment Center in Daejeon City from May to July, 2005. Their readiness to change was divided into precontemplation,
contemplation, and action stage through Readiness To Change Questionnaire and insight status was measured through Hanil Alcohol Insight Scale.
As results, 14 patients(10.7%) were in the stage of precontemplation, 65(49.6%) in contemplation, and 52(39.7%) in action stage. Insight score of the patients in precontemplation stage was significantly(p=0.000) lower than others.
To control the factors that were different among each stage of the readiness to change, we performed multinomial logistic regression, based on the patients in the stage of precontemplation. According to the results of multinomial logistic regression, the possibility of contemplation and action stage went up 1.224(p=0.005) and 1.249(p=0.002) times higher as insight score increased.
In conclusions, the insight seems to have an important role in transferring from precontemplation to contemplation stage in alcoholism.
