    218 nurses who have worked in three university hospital in Seoul were selected conveniently.
    The instruments that were used for this study were Nurses Stress Scale, Coping Behavior Scale and CMI.
    Analysis of data was fore by Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Analysis of Variance, Stepwise Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis.
    The result of this study were as follows;
    1. 71 nurse's stress producing events associated with hospital nursing situation were organized into 17 stress factors by factor analysis.
    The 17 factors were factor (1) work overload, factor (2) lack of nursing expertise, factor (3) encroachment of self-esteem, factor (4) painful nursing situation and doubt about nursing efficacy, factor (5) nursing management, factor (6) reward, factor (7) nurse role performance, factor (8) interpersonal relationship, factor (9) communication, factor (10) miscellaneous affairs and noise, factor (11) lack of close friendship with nursing staff, factor (12) relationship with superior, factor (13) gaps between theory and practice, factor (14) duty by special scheduling, factor (15) neglect and lack of practice capability of nursing staff, factor (16) lack of confidence in medical team and factor (17) off duty.
    2. Regarding the first hypothesis, a positive correlaltion did exist between level of stress and self reported health problem score. (r=.2973, p<.0001)
    Thus, the first hypothesis was supported.
    3. Regarding the second hypothesis, a positive correlation did exist between level of stress and coping behavior score. (r=.3141, p<.001)
    Thus, the second hypothesis was supported.
    4. Regarding the third hypothesis, the relationship between coping behavior score and self-reported health problem score was not statistically significant. (r=-.0308, p>.05)
    Thus, the third hypothesis was rejected.
