The Nakdong River Delta has been formed at the rivermouth of the Nakdong River and is a representative delta in Korea. The Nakdong River separates itself to east and west into two great streams, between which Daejo Isle and other numerous deltas have grown. The main stream is the present East Nakdong River. The level plain of the Nakdong River Delta has an area of 136 square kilometers--16Km east to north and 6Km east to west.
The total quantity of sands conveyed annually by the Nakdong River amounts to ten million tons. The deposits of the delta are thicker in the southwest. The surrounding elevated natural levee is utilized as orchard, farming field, settlement, traffic and water ways.
The low back marsh in the center has a ditch or a drainage and is the central part of rice growing. In Menho Isle the beach ridge has grown in both the eastern and western parts, which fact has caused the growth of farming field and settlement.
In the southernmost part of the rivermouth there lies a small delta still in the making, the greater part of which is still undeveloped. Owing to its geographical structure facing east and west, the delta is greatly influenced by the sea. The soil of the Nakdong River Delta consists of sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay, which are distributed from north to south. The area is divided into orchard belt, vegetable belt and rice growing belt.
It was not until 1916 that the whole area began to be cleared. The area used to be greatly damaged by flood and drought, and the utilization of the land was still insignificant at that time, but enlargement work has been practised for three times for the construction of dikes and the establishment of water supply and drainage services.
The central belt of rice growing lies in the central lowland, and the transition of rice seeds from traditional seed to mass producing seed has yielded the produce of 500kg per 300pyung.
As for fruit trees, pears and grapes are grown in Daejo Isle and north Dukdo Isle. Grape produce is poor, but pearcrops amount to 7,000 tons a year.
Vegetable growing is mainly enforced culture. In such isles as Daejo Isle, Dukdo Isle, Subong Isle and Mengho Isle, they grow spring celery cabbage, spring raddish, cucumber, watermelon, tomato, lettuce, carnation and chrysanthemum.
The whold area of the southernmost new delta is a natural mounment for migratory birds, so that land exploitation is prohibited here. A part of the area is used as an amusement part of the Busan citizens. The settlement, which has two forms of agglomerated settlement and dispersed settlemtnt, has grown mainly inside the natural levee, beach ridge and dikes.
This area was merged into Busan city on Feb. 15, 1978. Former Daejo-up(town) was divided into two parts, which were respectively renamed as Daejo Ist-dong and Daejo 2nd-dong. Meng ji-myun was renamed as Mengji-dong and a part of karak-myun was renamed as karak-dong. All these have come under the control of North Ward, Busan City.
