What do You Pray about? = The Effect of Prayer on Political Participation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 기도가 정치참여에 미치는 효과를 다루고 있다. 미국에서 기도가 사람들의 생활에 보편적으로 자리잡았음에도 불구하고, 그것의 사회정치적 함축에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 적은 편이다. 종교와 정치참여에 대한 기존의 연구들은 예배참여로 대표되는 종교의 공적 표현에 관심을 기울여왔다. 그러나 본 연구는 종교의 사적 표현이 정치참여에 미치는 영향, 특별히 기도가 정치참여에 대해 갖는 효과에 초점을 맞추려 한다. 미국 전국 단위의 설문조사와 회귀분석에 근거하여, 본 연구는 기도의 내용이 중요한 역할을 함을 밝혀내었다. 특별히 타인을 위해 신께 드리는 중보기도가 정치참여에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이런 발견들은 기도의 영향력이 단순히 사적인 경건생활의 영역을 벗어나 정치참여의 영역까지 확대될 수 있음을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the effects of prayer on political participation. Given the prevalence of prayer life in the United States, little attention has been paid to its social and political import. Previous studies on the relationship between religion and political participation have concentrated on the public dimension of religion, primarily on church attendance. However this study attempts to investigate the effect of the private dimension of religion on politics, particularly the effect of prayer on political participation. Using a nationally represented dataset and employing OLS analysis, this study provides support for the importance of the content of prayer, with intercessory prayer positively impacting political participation. Findings suggest that the effect of prayer can extend beyond private devotion to the realm of political engagement.
