This study was conducted to develop guidelines for nurses who care colostomy patients. Our study(Choi & Kim, 1997) clearly demonstrated the importance of self care capability and skill. Teaching self care skills may improve the patient's compliance with rehabilitation. It also showed that acceptance and positive attitude to colostomy facilitated coping process.
On the basis of above results, we developed guidelines which encourage nurses to utilize resources available in the community and to aid patients in their adjustment to colostomy surgery. These guidelines have been developed from patient's perspective.
The standards are designed to ensure continuing patient education from diagnosis to rehabilitation. The standards are divided into three parts : preoperative, postoperative, and long-term rehabilitation. Standards, rationale, outcome criteria, and interventions have been identified for each part. These standards may improve patient awareness and knowledge concerning life with a colostomy.
