This thesis is aiming to analyze the process of the regional cleavages in modem Korea and examine its characteristics. The political and socio-economic backgrounds of the regional cleavages and such a political practice as elections are studied here.
Historically, the regional difference and discrimination which have accumulated since 1960s have been expanded and reproduced rather than eliminated. In other words, the traditional local prejudices continued to spread during the military rule, and political and economic discriminations between regions have been built up in line with the relationship of political centre and peripheries in Korea.
The group conciousness based on the native place exposes the differences in conjunction with the complex interaction of sociopsychological discrimination, regional inclination in the political recruitment of elites and regional inequality in the process of economic growth.
The main structure of the regional cleavages in Korea consists of 「Youngnam vs. Honam」 and 「Honam vs. non-Honam」. The political aspects of the regional cleavages have been appeared in a shape of hegemonic, defensive and reflective regionalism.
In order to solve this regional conflicts and cleavages, the essential factor is the improvement of regional discriminative structure. In this processes, it requires to reinforce the fairness of the political recruitment of elites and to guarantee the equality of regional developments. And also it needs to eliminate the traditional local prejudices.
