This study aims to deeply analyze the formation of disability identity and the experiences of the use of passing and masquerading strategies by people with disabilities across multilayered contexts. In particular, it explores how internal factors, social norms, institutional environments, and public perceptions intersect and interact to shape and activate such strategies in various social situations where disability identity is revealed. Furthermore, the ultimate goal is to precisely understand the purpose behind the use of these strategies and the meaning of the experience. In addition, it aims to socially visualize the subjective experiences and voices of people with disabilities, and to contribute to understanding the lives of people with disabilities from a more three-dimensional and holistic perspective. To this end, by applying the comparative analysis method of qualitative research, in-depth interviews were conducted focusing on the life histories of 6 participants.
The main findings of this study are as follows.
First, as a result of analyzing the process of disability identity formation and disability identity, it appeared in three dimensions: psychological, social, and cultural. At the psychological level, different experiences were shown starting from the perception of the body, and at the social level, disability identity was formed through the process of identifying with other disabled people or with the same group. At the cultural level, participants showed a pattern of being influenced by their disability identities through their own cultural experiences. Based on these life experiences, four types of disability identity emerged: autonomous identity, change-driven identity, ambiguous boundary identity, and interactive identity.
Second, in terms of individual disability passing and experience of using masquerading strategies, people with disabilities cross-used passing and masquerading strategies to defend themselves from social stigma and prejudice, secure fair opportunities, and improve their sense of belonging.
Third, as a result of analyzing the purpose of strategy use, it showed a pattern of flexibly selecting strategies according to the situation at the social and cultural levels. Initially, at the social level, it appeared that the strategy of cross-using disability passing and masquerading was used. Specifically, there was a tendency to cross-use strategies for 'maintaining stable relationships', 'acquiring appropriate social support', 'securing equal and fair competitiveness', 'improving a sense of belonging within the same group', and 'self-advocacy and stigma management in online spaces'. At the cultural level, it was observed that the masquerading strategy was mainly used to pursue the spread of disability culture and change the perception of society on the whole. It appeared that masquerading strategies were used ‘for the formation of a culture and human rights subjectivity for people with hearing disabilities,’ ‘for the formation of a culture for people with liver disabilities,’ and ‘for cultural self-expression and a change in social awareness of people with mental disabilities.’ Four key themes were derived from the meaning of these experiences: 'internal growth and strengthening disability identity', 'discovery of transformative power', 'release of boundaries and reconstruction of a sense of belonging', and 'contributing to the formation of disability movement culture as new subjects'. This shows that people with disabilities are not just passive identity recipients, but are agentive subjects who actively organize their lives and intervene in social structures.
This study attempted to lay the foundation for the theoretical expansion and practical policy of disability studies by analyzing the formation of disability identity, disability passing, and use of masquerading strategies as a multidimensional process closely intertwined with social and cultural structures rather than a simple individual dimension. In particular, by interpreting the passing and masquerading strategies of people with disabilities as a form of new social intervention, it challenges social stereotypes and discriminatory perceptions surrounding disability and raises the need to spread a more comprehensive and plural understanding of disability.
