빵떼옹(Panthéon de Paris)과 상징 정치

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 프랑스 파리 5구(5e Arrondissement)에 위치하고 있는 빵떼옹(Pantheon)의 형성과 변화과정을 정치사ㆍ예술사의 관점에서 고찰함으로써, 상징의 정치적 의미와 역할을 탐색하는 이른바 상징정치학(symbolic politics)의 한 사례를 보여주고자 한다. 본 논문의 직접적 관심은 1981년 대통령 선거에서 승리한 사회당 후보 미테랑(Francois Mitterand)이 공식 취임 행사 장소로 빵떼옹을 선택했다는 역사적 사실에 놓여져 있고 이러한 사실 속에서 필자는 정치 의례의 공간으로서의 빵떼옹의 정치적ㆍ미학적 특성을 분석하고자 한다. 가톨릭교회라는 종교적 시원을 갖는 빵떼옹은 프랑스 혁명을 통해 혁명의 사원이라는 새로운 정치적 의미를 획득하게 되고 이러한 정치적 변화과정은 빵떼옹의 건축 미학 상의 변화 역시 이끌어낸다. 이후 일련의 정치적 격변들은 빵떼옹의 정치적 성격과 미학적 내용을 계속 변화시키는데 프랑스 정체가 공화정으로 완결되는 19세기 후반에 이르러 빵떼옹은 궁극적으로 공화국과 국민의 사원이라는 의미체로 완성되기에 이른다. 1981년 미테랑의 정치적 의례 행위는 빵떼옹의 이러한 역사와 밀접한 결합관계를 갖는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper attempts to analyze the construction and changes of the Pantheon of Paris, which lies in the 5e Arrondissement, by focusing on its political and artistic history. By doing so, this paper proposes one example of symbolic politics by investigating the meaning and role of symbol in the political activities. First of all, I'd like to analyze political and aesthetic characteristics of the Pantheon as a ceremonial space in French politics by introducing the fact that the socialist Francois Mitterand chose it as the ceremonial space to celebrate his victory after the 1981's presidential election. Constructed originally as a catholic church, it was, throughout the French Revolution, redefined as the temple of Revolution, and this political change has also entailed aesthetic modification. Political turmoils in France that followed have changed its political and architectural meaning, ultimately recognizing the Pantheon as the temple of republic and nation when the French Republic was established. In this regard, the political action of Mitterand in 1981, is closely related to the aforementioned history of the Pantheon.
