This paper deals with the vibration characteristics of an ultrasonic transducer of two piezoelectric discs. Theoretically, natural frequencies and mode shapes of in-plane and out-of-plane modes of the transducer were obtained from equations of motion and boundary conditions. By the three-dimensional mode shapes were supplemented. Experimentally, the natural frequencies were measured by an impedance analyzer, and the in-plane mode shapes were obtained from the amplitudes of vibration displacement measured by a laser in-plane vibrometer. The theoretical analysis was verified by comparing three kinds of results, and variations of the vibration characteristics according to the thickness of the piezoelectric disc were identified.
