Next-generation, high-energy, and safe rechargeable batteries, particularly all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), are attracting significant attention. Replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with inorganic solid electrolytes improves safety, and sulfide-based solid electrolytes are especially promising due to their high ionic conductivity and processability. However, sulfide-based ASSBs still struggle to deliver satisfactory performance. Prior studies have largely adopted an ion-centric view, focusing on improving ionic conductivity, which cannot fully account for the pronounced initial IR drop and severe polarization observed under high-rate operation. This suggests that the electronic conductivity of the cathode active material (CAM) also plays a critical role.
Accordingly, this study fixes the Ni content in LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) cathodes and varies the Co/Mn ratio—examining NCM613, NCM622, and NCM631—to investigate how the intrinsic electronic conductivity of the CAM impacts the initial IR drop, impedance, and high-rate performance in sulfide-based ASSBs. Our results demonstrate that higher electronic conductivity in the active material leads to superior high-rate performance. In contrast to prior ASSB studies that identified ionic conductivity as the primary bottleneck, our findings establish that enhancing the active material’s electronic conductivity is an essential design principle for maximizing ASSB performance.
