This paper studies Yu Hui-chun(柳希春)'s scholarship and thought, focusing on his early teacher-student relationship. He learned about Tongjian(通鑑) from the family tradition that continued from Choi Bu(崔 溥) and Yu Gye-rin(柳桂隣), and learned from Choi San-du(崔山斗), a famous scholar who grew academically through Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu (資治通鑑綱目). Through this teacher-student relationship, the academic foundation for Tongjian studies(通鑑學) was formed.
Among his writings, Tonggam Goi(通鑑考異) is a commentary on Zhu Xi(朱熹)’s Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu(資治通鑑綱目), and Zhidang Gwan Gyeon Pyoje(致堂管見標題) is a commentary on Hu Yin(胡寅)’s Doksa Gwan Gyeon(讀史管見). The Tongjian Jeonki(通鑑前記) is a summary of the relevant parts from the Yeokdae Tongjian Chanyo(歷代通鑑纂要) by Li Dongyang(李東陽) of the Ming Dynasty to supplement the Tongjian(通 鑑) that was lacking in the Tongjian(通鑑) from Fuxi(伏羲) to the Spring and Autumn Period. The Yeokdae Yorok(歷代要錄) is the only extant work that briefly describes the history of China from ancient times to the Song and Yuan dynasties. Judging from these writings, he can be said to be a representative scholar well-versed in Tongjian studies in the 16th century.
