‘성서적 인문주의자’ 올림피아 풀비아 모라타 : “올림피아와 라비니아의 대화”를 중심으로 = ‘Biblical Humanist’ Olympia Fulvia Morata : A Study Focused on “Two Dialogues between Olympia and Lavinia”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 이탈리아 페라라에서 태어나 독일 하이델베르크에서 29살이라는 이른 나이에 숨진 올림피아 풀비아 모라타라는 16세기 여성 인문주의자이자 프로테스탄트 개혁자의 생애와 사상에 관한 연구이다. 올림피아는 그리스어와 라틴어에 능숙한 당대 최고의 고전학자요 인문주의자 중 한 사람이었으며, 동시에 성서 연구에 매진한 성서학자이자 삶의 고난 속에서 경건의 깊이와 높이와 넓이를 키운 프로테스탄트 개혁자였다. 올림피아라는 한 사람 안에서 인문주의 전통과 종교개혁 전통이 하나로 합쳐져, ‘성서적 인문주의’로 융합되었다. 본 연구는 성서적 인문주의자로서의 올림피아의 사상과 특징을 가장 잘 드러내 보여주는 그녀의 산문 작품 두 편, 즉 “올림피아와 라비니아의 대화”(1550) 그리고 “테오필라와 필로티마의 대화”(1551-52)를 분석하며 살펴볼 것이다. 더불어 올림피아와 라비니아(Lavinia della Rovere) 사이에 주고받은 편지를 검토할 것이다.
올림피아와 라비니아 사이에 이루어진 두 대화 그리고 그들이 나눈 편지는 올림피아가 어떤 신앙인이자 개혁자였는지, 그리고 그녀가 중요한 신학적 주제들 즉 고난, 행복, 성찬, 예정 등에 대해 어떤 관점을 가지고 있었는지를 보여주는 하나의 창이다. 이 창을 통해 우리는 한 여성 교사이자 개혁자가 16세기 격동의 시대를 어떻게 읽고 살아냈는지를 바라보게 된다. 무엇보다 올림피아 모라타라는 이탈리아 여성은 국내에 거의 소개되어 있지 않기 때문에 본 연구의 의의가 있다고 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Olympia Fulvia Morata was one of the best classical scholars and humanists of her time fluent in Greek and Latin, a biblical scholar who devoted to the study of the Bible and a Protestant reformer who developed the depth, height, and breadth of piety through the hardships in life. Within one person, Olympia, the humanist tradition and the Reformation movement came together and merged into ‘biblical humanism.’ This study examines two of her prose works that best reveal Olympia’s thoughts and characteristics as a biblical humanist: “Dialogue between Lavinia Della Rovere and Olympia Morata”(1550) and “Dialogue between Theophila and Philotima”(1551-52), In addition, I will review letters exchanged between Olympia and Lavinia della Rovere.
The two dialogues between Olympia and Lavinia and their letters are a window into what kind of believer and reformer Olympia was, and what perspectives she had on important theological topics such as suffering, happiness, the Eucharist, and predestination. Through this window, we see how a female teacher(magistra) and reformer read and lived through the turbulent times of the 16th century. Above all, this study is significant because the Italian woman named Olympia Morata is rarely introduced in Korea.
