Monoterpenes in needles of Pinus thunbergii, P. thunbergii × P. densiflora and P. densiflora were measured by the direct headspace sampling(DHS) method in gas chromatography in order to identify the two species and their hybrids. As the concentration of two major monoterpenes, α-pinene and β-pinene, was quite different among the two species and their hybrids, identification of the hybrids was quite easily achieved. The concentration of α-pinene in P. thunbergii was two times than in P. densiflora. while that of β-pinene in P. thunbergii was more than ten times than in P. densiflora. The concentration of α-pinene in hybrids was similar to that in P. thunbergii. while that of β-pinene in hybrids was middle value between P. thunbergii and P. densiflora. The concentration of α-pinene and β-pinene was quite different among the two species and their hybrids. In P. thunbergii β-pinene was three times than α-pinene, while in P. densiflora α-pinene was two times than β-pinene. However, the content of β-pinene was a little higher than α-pinene in hybrids. Therefore, the hybrids could be identified with the concentration of β-pinene and comparison of α-pinene and β-pinene.
