This article discusses the background of recent developments in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language (TKFL) as a field of academic study and further addresses the issue of what should be done to strengthen its foundation. In order to foresee changes in TKFL field, this article reviews previous and current TKFL studies and discusses what should be done to further develop the field as a firmly founded course of academic study. More empirical studies based on the data-driven and systematic research methodology employed in applied linguistics and foreign language education should be conducted to further develop this field. It is also argued that scholars in TKFL related fields such as Korean linguistics, foreign language education, and applied linguistics should work together to implement successful curriculums for TKFL.
