섬지역의 인구학적 특성에 따른 보건진료원의 활동 = The Working Activities of Island Community Health Practitioners in Relation to the Island`s Demographic Characteristics

The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the working activities of Community Health Practitioners (CHP) on Korea`s island according to community`s demographic characteristics. The operational report data of 63 islands` PHCPs(Primary Health Care Posts), were collected by mail from January to June 2010. These data include information on population, primary medical services (primary health care activities), health promotion activities and other health services. The average population of a single PHCP was 440, the crude birth rate per 1,000 was 1.52, and the crude mortality rate per 1,000 was 6.20. The number of patient visits per 1,000 persons per month was 124.3, and each CHP treated 7.2 persons per day. This value had no significant difference between CHP areas, but there was a clear difference between the islands, in relation to the island`s population. The most common working activities among health services were primary medical services, home visit services and health promotion services such as consultations, elderly health services, women`s health services and chronic health services. TB control services and eye health services were among the unimportant activities. Primary medicine and visiting home services were in the PHCPs first interests. These results suggest that innovative functions and the public health sector roles of CHPs such as health promotion services, home visits and community health and welfare services should be emphasized in order to improve the CHP support system on Korean islands.
