近代 歷史小說의 스토리텔링 樣相 硏究 : 「南怡將軍實記」를 중심으로 = A study on the trend of story-telling in modern historical novels - Based on the older type novel 'A History of General 남이'

The purpose of this paper is to examine story-telling trends in modem historical novels, in particular the influence of 'A History of General 남이' and its special characteristics on the creation of a new form of story-telling.
The dramatic life of General 남이 has received attention due to the tragic life of the hero. He has been well known from 'A History of General 남이', an older type of historical novel, since the 1920's.
The main reason why his story attracts attention is the coincidences between his whereabouts and the circumstances of his times. On the one hand, readers were thought to be attracted by the dynamic development of events and his great abilities and on the other hand by his tragic death.
As a result of an analysis of 'A History of General 남이', I have identified three elements that we can also find in today's story-telling.
First, the modem historical novel has a realistic story development based on records and documents. This realism is only possible within a historical novel that adheres to the truth. Second, the hero is extraordinary and the novel embodies his fateful love. Third, it is a story of god versus evil with a tragic ending. These elements of the story were inspired by those same characteristics of 'A History of General 남이'. Today, the special characteristics of 'A History of General 남이' are very meaningful at a time when cultural contents based on historical truth have come under a critical spotlight.
