Pixar has mainly produced commercial feature animations, and has produced experimental short animations through the Sparkshots program to discover new projects. In particular, I focused on the case of non-verbal sound and selected 'Smash and Grab' and 'Kitbull' as research subjects to explore new possibilities for the non-linguistic effects of animation sound. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of the important role of non-verbal sound in narrative-oriented works by analyzing the non-linguistic effects of sound related to the characters in these two works.
An analysis tool that recreated the functions of the non-verbal elements of dialogue, sound effects, and music suggested by Stanley R. Alten was utilized as a research method. Accordingly, by analyzing the non-verbal elements of the voices of the characters, the behavior of the characters and the sound effects of the surroundings, the expression of the background music for the characters in the animations, and the range of the characters described by the background music, the non-linguistic effects of the sound are considered.
Both animations are similar in that there is no linguistic dialogue, and in each work, two characters are set as the main characters. However, the roles of sounds that cause non-linguistic effects are different. First, in ‘Smash and Grab', the difference in pitch between the two robotic voices worked, but in ’Kitbull', the effect of the non-verbal elements of the dialogue was insignificant. Second, ‘Smash and Grab' played a large role in the sound effects of the characters' actions, but ’Kitbull' showed a greater effect of ambient sound. Third, in ‘Smash and Grab', the background music depicts multiple characters and the arrangement of the background music influences the character's story, but the background music of ’Kitbull' depicts singular character and the sound of a specific instrument is important appeared. This difference is due to the difference in the genre of the two works and the setting of the characters, and the non-linguistic effects of the sound resulting from these differences made the identity of each work more clear.
In both animations, the non-linguistic effects of the sound played an important role in the directing of short animation by expressing the character's personality and relationship and communication, the environment related to the character, the development of the story, and the situation of singular or multiple characters. These research results show the possibility that the non-linguistic effects of non-verbal sound can give more than the dialogue of verbal language.
