Previous research has suggested that consumers will be happier if they spend their money on experiences as opposed to material possession. Then, will consumers feel more satisfaction with material products than with experiential products when they purchase gifts for others? It seems unlikely that experiential purchases make people more satisfied over time when it comes to buying a gift. Why do people derive more enduring satisfaction from buying material gifts? Despite the importance of the experiential gift market considering its growth potential. most of the gift-giving research to date has focused on material goods. This paper thus seeks to shed light on the mechanism behind satisfaction associated with material and experiential gift purchases. For this purpose, we have conducted four studies with an integrative approach of qualitative and quantitative research methods. In Study 1. survey results show that material gifts give relatively more satisfaction, which is in direct opposition to the results of general purchase. This difference is caused by the decrease in satisfaction with experiential gifts over time. In Study 2, we conducted an in-depth interview and found that material gifts hold a dominant position in memory marking and observability. and that these features make material gifts relatively more satis1ing to gift-givers. Study 3 confirms that memory marking and observability mediate the effect of product category on the current satisfaction through a survey. Finally, experiments in Study 4 demonstrates the causal relationship between two mediating variables (memory marking and observability) and the current satisfaction with a gift purchase. The results of experiments also indicate that marketers can increase customer satisfaction by maximizing memory marking or observability of gifts even in the same product category. The research findings suggest many implications for marketers and researchers. Limitations and future research ideas are also discussed.
