The ultimate goal of Korean language education is to communicate effectively in Korean. Listening is important as a basic function of language. People are increasingly interested in strategies for better listening comprehension.
This study's purposes were to identify ways to help Korean instructors teach listening comprehension more efficiently - and to elicit methods for learners of the Korean language to improve their overall listening skills by looking for the differences between high and low-level individuals’ listening strategies and understanding of listening.
This study employed surveys and listening tests targeting intermediate level Chinese students studying Korean in universities. It also examined the various listening strategies utilized by these students. Finally, statistics analyzing the collected data were compiled.
The results indicated that the most common strategies used were Compensation and Affective Strategies, and the least common strategies that instructors need not teach or practice were Memory Strategies and Cognitive Strategies. Furthermore, a variety of results were analyzed according to each learner's listening strategies. Learners who were interested in learning Korean utilized more strategies than those who were not. The former group especially utilized Cognitive, Memory and Social Strategies. Furthermore, learners who study only Korean listening utilized Cognitive and Social Strategies more. Students were placed into one of two categories based upon their level of listening proficiency: high and low-level. Generally, learners in the high-level group utilized listening strategies more than those in the low-level group, especially Cognitive, Memory and Affective Strategies. Additionally, to discover which strategies were most effective for improving listening comprehension skills, the researcher examined those utilized by the learners.
As a result, the results indicated that learners in the high-level group more actively utilized a variety of strategies to solve listening problems than those applied in the low-level group.
The significance of this study is twofold. First, it demonstrates the characteristics of listening strategies utilized by Korean language learners, and second, it contributes basic data to Korean education. Secondly, it is hoped that students of the Korean language will utilize this study to more effectively improve their listening comprehension.
