The Relationship between Stress and Dropout Intention of Middle and High School Tennis Players

This study is aimed to identify the relationship between stress and dropout intention of middle and high school tennis players. To achieve the study objective, 176 middle and high school tennis players were selected in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas. using the stratified cluster random sampling method. The study instruments include the modified SSSQ (Sports Stress Sources Questionnaire) used by Kim (2003) to measure stress and Dropout Intention used by Lee (2006) to measure their intention of dropout. The data was submitted to SPSS PC+ 15.0 for Window for descriptive statistics, one way ANOVA and standard multiple regression analysis.
The results from those analyses on the relationship between stress and dropout intention of middle and high school tennis players can be summarized as follows.
First, there are significant differences in stress and dropout intention across different demographic characteristics of the middle and high school tennis players.
There are significant differences in stress and dropout intention across different genders, award experiences, career as a player, daily average exercising time.
Second, the stress of middle and high school tennis players is significantly related to their dropout intention.
The results showed that the concern about main player in the middle and high school tennis players and fear about continuation of exercise affect their dropout intention, the fear of failure, concern about main player, fear of continuation of exercise and economic burden affect the intention of the school and the concern about main player, fear of continuation of exercise and economical burden affect the intention of their parents.
