In the small episode of the healing of Sir Urry in Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur, Sir Lancelot is said to weep as if “he had bene a chylde that had bene beatyn!,” after he miraculously heals the sick knight Sir Urry. The objective of this paper is to investigate the implications of his tears in relation to “The Tale of the Sankgreal.” The theme of this healing episode is more analogous to that of the holy grail story than to that of the seventh tale wherein this episode is located. For the religious messages first introduced and manifested in the holy grail quest are revisited in this story. Critics have contended that, whereas he failed in the first religious adventure on account of his excessive pride and arrogance, Lancelot can successfully complete the second because he has finally learned necessary virtues, notably humility. However, I take this line of reading the episodes as unthorough and even misleading. Instead, I would like to propose that while the proper holy grail quest became a sequence of “traumatic” situations that made Sir Lancelot experience the unfathomable helplessness, the second religious mission of the healing of the sick knight works as an opportunity to make him confront and “work through” the trauma, and that the tears that he sheds after restoring the health of the knight is corporeal evidence of the “abreaction” of the wound. I would also propose that the miracle of healing Urry enables Lancelot to recognize the truth that the divine grace is granted to sinful creatures, like him, not earned through any human struggles and efforts, and that his tears are a concrete manifestation of the recognition. For the theoretical devices for my argument, I will draw on Freudian notions, most notably “trauma” and “working-through”.
