When faults occur in transmission lines, protective relays need to operate fast and accurately to protect transmission lines and electrical equipments and to supply power with good quality. To advance the reliability of power network, the accurate fault detection and fault distance estimation must be implemented.
This paper proposes the fault distance estimation method using artificial neural networks. In this paper, fault distance estimation is performed using fundamental component of 3-phase voltages and currents. To evaluate the performance of the technique using artificial neural network, the propriety of fault distance estimation is verified using EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program).
