한국교회 예배의 현주소와 그 발전적 미래 모색 = Critical Reflections on the Korean Protestant Worship and the Liturgical Proposals for Its Future Development

Worship is a central act of the Christian Church since the ultimate goal of all the faithfuls and creatures is to worship God in their lives and existence. In the face of the current negative evaluation of and even attacks against the Korean churches, it is significant to reconsider their worship above all because if it has been properly located in Christian spirituality so far, such hostile environment would have been much minimized. For the reorientation or better location of the Korean worship, the following critical points should be reflected. First, the sermon centered worship and praise centered worship widely common today are, while positive in promoting participation of the people in worship by its free and convenient style on the one hand, they may be lacking in identity of Christian worship on the other hand due to the failure of covering the gospel in balanced fashion. Second, while the current liturgical renewal movement may be a good phenomenon for recovery of the Christian worship since it helps bring up newly its foundational identity examined and refined throughout the Christian history, it may not be proper when they are uncritically applied to the current worships facing the radical changes in communication paradigm. From this awareness, there may be several proposals for today`s or future worship. First, the Korean churches should make serious efforts to recover and reaffirm the identity of worship especially by relying to the wisdoms or practices embedded in the rich liturgical tradition through ``diachronic approach``, which is not confined to a particular age but found in the whole periods represented by the earliest, reformation, and contemporary periods. Second, the Church should not stay in static idea on worship theology but try to adapt herself to the current new socio-cultural and technical environment. Third, the churches should not be satisfied only with pacifying the congregation in rituals but also proceed to more close relationship with the society in care and service, which may culminate in completeness of worship.
