다마스커스 강철과 단접무늬 강철에 관한 연구 = A Study of Damascus steel and Pattern Welded Steel

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인류는 그 출현에서부터 많은 문화적 생산물들을 제작해 왔다. 심지어 전쟁을 통해서도 우수한 성능의 무기류들을 만들어 냈다. 이러한 전쟁의 산물로서의 무기류들 중에는 페르시아로부터 중세 서양에 알려진 검도 있는데, 그것이 바로 다마스커스 검이다. 이 검은 다른 검들과는 다르게, 얇고 가벼우면서도 강도와 경도가 높고 탄력성이 뛰어나, 당시 유럽의 무기 문화 속에서 최상의 무기로 인정받았다. 그러나 그 재료 및 제작과정이 비밀에 붙여진 탓에, 검 자체의 제작은 물론이고 거기에 새겨진 무늬의 재현은 19세기 초엽까지는 이루어지지 못했다. 그러나 19세기 중엽 총포가 발명되면서 대장장이 기술자들과 금속공예가들이 다마스커스 검의 아름다운 무늬를 보다 선명하게 제작해 낼 수 있는 방법을 연구하여 지금의 단접무늬강철을 개발해 냈다. 이와 같은 검의 재료 및 무늬의 재현이 어느 정도 가능해 짐에 따라 다마스커스 검을 연구하는 20세기의 연구가들은 더욱 섬세하고 심도 있는 연구를 통해 과거 다마스커스 검의 명성에 걸맞은 강철 재료와 무늬의 재현을 우리시대에 이루어 낼 수 있었다. 다마스커스 검에 대한 이러한 연구들에 힘입어 현대의 금속공예가들 중에는 다마스커스 검과 관련이 있는 단접무늬강철을 이용하여 장신구나 레져용 칼을 제작해 내고 있다. 이러한 사실은 과거 금속문화의 유산을 현대의 금속공예분야에 확장시켜 그 의미지평을 넓혀가고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 따라서 연구자는 이 글에서 단접무늬강철에 대한 제작 기술과 가공방법을 연구․숙달하여 독특한 무늬를 제작해 냄으로써 잊혀진 과거의 재료를 현대에 재현․발전시켜 장신구나 소품 및 가구 등 금속공예의 전 분야에 활용되어 질 수 있는 가능성에 대해 접근해 보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since the arrival of humankind, man never stops waging war against an identical ethnic group or one’s own country for the reason of expansion of one’s influence, exploitation of labor force, conflict on religion. The outcomes of the these kind of war are decided not only by tactics, justification, intrepidity, but also by performance of weapons. Damascus sword have known after the Crusades from the Persia. This sword is known for its flimsiness(thin), lightness, and high hardness, elasticity compared with other countries’ sword. For security reasons for a production of sword, however, it was recognized that Damascus steel’s metallurgy had been forgotten at 19th century. Ever since, numerous black smiths and technician tried to rebirth of Damascus by researching a traditional way, however, it had been failed due to lack of pattern visibility. In addition to that, due to extensive development of science, superior type of metal has been developed and from 1850s, as firearms has been started to invent, interest on sword also has been gone. By researching on how to make Damascus sword’s patterns vividly and beautiful, however, Pattern Welded Steel had been invented. In recent time, due to the attractiveness of Damask and Damascene patterns of the sword, attaching beautiful jewelries and accessories on the sword has been broadened rather than improving sword’s strength or elasticity. By researching on Pattern Welded Steel based on Damascus Steel’s history and production methods, we wish to broaden an area of various modeling expression.
