경계선 지적 기능 아동 어머니의 양육 경험에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 경계선 지적장애 아동을 양육하는 어머니들의 체험을 통한 본질의 의미를 탐구하고자 하였다. 면접은 2011년 10월부터 2012년 7월까지 약 10개월동안 8명의 경계선 지적장애 아동 어머니를 대상으로 2～3회에 걸쳐 현상학적 연구로 진행되었다. 그 결과 경계선 지적장애 아동 어머니들의 양육경험의 본질은 ‘달리기를 못하는 느리게 걷는 아동과 발묶어 보폭 맞추며 걸어가는’ 것으로 해석되었다. 아이는 느리게 갈 뿐이고 늦게 도착할 뿐이다. 우리 아이는 달리지 못하고 느리게 걷는 것임을 안 후에는 아이와 보폭을 맞추며 무사히 이 과정이 마쳐지기를 바라게 된다.
경계선 지적장애 아동을 양육하는 과정에서 어머니들이 경험하는 경계선 지적장애의 의미는 다음과 같았다.
첫째, 경계선 지적장애는 발달이 늦거나 어리석거나 엄마를 답답하게 하는 행동들을 하는 아이이다. 즉 처음부터 다른 아이와 다른 아이였다는 것이다.
둘째, 경계선 지적장애 아동들의 어머니들은 학습의 어려움과 친구관계가 가장 힘들다고 하였다. 그 중에서도 친구관계는 어머니가 도와주기가 힘든 사항이라 더 불안하고 두려운 것이다.
셋째, 경계선 지적장애아동을 위한 개입은 ‘엄마’ 혼자만의 힘으로 되지 않는다는 것이다.
넷째, 미래에 대한 불안은 늘 어머니들을 갈등스럽게 한다. 엄마들은 학습을 시킬 것이냐 말 것이냐, 특수학급을 보낼 것이냐 말 것이냐, 장애등급을 받을 것인가 말 것인가, 우리 아이행동과 태도를 어떻게 대해야 하느냐 끊임없이 고민하고 갈등하므로 정확한 지침서가 있으면 좋을 것이다.
