덕윤리와 상대주의 = Virtue Ethics and Relativism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 상대주의문제에 대한 현대의 대표적인 덕윤리적 대응 두 가지를 살펴보면서 이러한 대응들이 얼마나 설득력이 있는지를 검토한다. 이를 위해 먼저, 상대주의 논의의 주요 문제를 확인하고 덕윤리의 특수주의를 살펴보면서 덕윤리가 상대주의에 연루된다는 비판을 검토한다. 둘째, 맥킨타이어(Alasdair MacIntyre)의 역사주의적 접근이 기술적 상대주의가 메타윤리적 상대주의로 직결되지 않는다는 것을 보여줄 수 있는지를 검토한다. 이러한 검토는 맥킨타이어의 전통 부가적 정당화가 지역적 관점을 초월하지 못하며, 자연주의를 거절한 상태에서 주장되는 그의 인간 텔로스는 공허한 개념에 불과하다는 것을 보여준다. 셋째, 아리스토텔레스의 자연주의적 입장을 계승하면서 덕의 객관성을 옹호하는 누스바움(Martha C. Nussbaum)의 주장을 검토한다. 누스바움은 인간본성을 내재적 평가적 관점에서 이해함으로써 아리스토텔레스의 자연주의적 접근을 계승하고자 하지만, 오히려 자연주의를 손상시키고 목적론에 더 많이 의존함으로써 덕의 객관성을 확보하지 못하게된다. 결국 맥킨타이어와 누스바움의 대응 모두 메타윤리적 상대주의를 극복하지 못하고 상대주의의 비판으로부터 자유롭지 못하게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate how persuasive two types of response in contemporary virtue ethics are with respect to the criticism of relativism. It results largely from the particularism of virtue ethics that virtue ethics is criticized as being involved in relativism. Alasdair MacIntyre's historicalized particularism is intended to show that there is no direct path from descriptive relativism to meta-ethical relativism. However, his idea of the tradition-ladenness justification cannot transcend local perspectives and his concept of human telos comes to be only an empty one. Another type of response is found from Martha C. Nussbaum who asserts on the objectivity of virtue while inheriting Aristotelian naturalism. Nussbaum aims to save Aristotelian naturalism by interpreting his conception of human nature from the internal and evaluative perspective. Her position, however, cannot ensure the objectivity of virtue as it is more dependent upon teleology than any other position. Both MacIntyre andNussbaum cannot reject meta-ethical relativism and so are not free from the criticism of relativism.
