This paper is to construct ideal street environments and to study harmony of facade of buildings with exterior materials that were used. The kinds and frequencies of materials which have been used in facade of 324 buildings on 4 major downtown streets in Taegu were observed.
The results are:
1. Exterior materials were usually limited to 3 kinds: tile, mortar and red brick.
2. They were mostly limited to tile for new buildings in streets that have been developed lately.
3. Use of the same materials reduced the characteristics of each buildings and also reduced the difference among the street environments.
4. Signboard and preservation materials affected the characteristics of buildings.
5. Use of exterior materials in building of the street where street sight of view changes intensely was more important than that in others of the street.
These results suggest that the differences among street environments and characteristic features of the buildings appear as materials are diversely used, and thus, it is required to develop new materials and technics to apply. Full plans about the street environment and the facade of buildings may be needed to keep the harmony of street environment and facade characteristics of buildings.
