This research examines the processes and problems of multicultural education in Korea while exploring the history and situation of multicultural education in America. Based on a wide-range of literature review and interviews, this work investigated media-based participatory multicultural education cases and methods. Up to now, America and Korea, similarly maintaining assimilation perspectives, tend to ignore race/ethnicity-based discriminations and other structural disparity issues by just showing diverse cultures grounded in contributive/additive multicultural education approaches. Media`s multicultural contents work as effective teaching materials to promote intercultural understanding as well as multicultural sensitivity and empathy. Multicultural education should focus more on media literacy education for better critical reading and interpretation abilities as well as storytelling education for increased expressive capacities. In Korea, regional media audience centers have supported media education programs while immigrants` ethnic media and school broadcasting systems have implemented media-based multicultural education. In conclusion, multicultural education should pay more attention to anti-bias education to remove long-term biases and discriminations rather than just showing diversities themselves. For this, it is essential to develop integrated multicultural education programs, which combine media literacy education using diverse media materials with storytelling education for better expressive skills through media contents.
